Gradient-Domain Photon Density Estimation

چکیده
The most common solutions to the light transport problem rely on either Monte Carlo (MC) integration or density estimation methods, such as uni& bi-directional path tracing or photon mapping. Recent gradient-domain extensions of MC approaches show great promise; here, gradients of the final image are estimated numerically (instead of the image intensities themselves) with coherent paths generated from a deterministic shift mapping. We extend gradient-domain approaches to light transport simulation based on density estimation. As with previous gradient-domain methods, we detail important considerations that arise when moving from a primalto gradient-domain estimator. We provide an efficient and straightforward solution to these problems. Our solution supports stochastic progressive density estimation, so it is robust to complex transport effects. We show that gradient-domain photon density estimation converges faster than its primal-domain counterpart, as well as being generally more robust than gradient-domain uni& bi-directional path tracing for scenes dominated by complex transport.

Historical Introduction to Photon Differential Splatting
This document provides a historical overview of the development in computer graphics that led to photon differential splatting. We highlight how photon differential splatting differs from this early related work. 1. Early Related Work It seems that a two-pass method for rendering caustics, where a tracing from the light sources is added to a tracing from the eye, was first suggested by Heckbert...

In this paper, the conjugate gradient method coupled with adjoint problem is used in order to solve the inverse heat conduction problem and estimation of the strength of the time- dependent heat source using the temperature distribution at a point in a three layer system. Also, the effect of noisy data on final solution is studied. The numerical solution of the governing equations is obtained b...
متن کاملEfficient visualization of lit automotive tail lights
We present a new method for estimating the radiance function of lit automotive tail lamps. The method is based on Jensen’s photon mapping algorithm. In order to capture high angular frequencies in the radiance function, we incorporate the angular domain into the density estimation. However, density estimation in position-direction space makes it necessary to find a tradeoff between the spatial ...
متن کاملRegularized Multitask Learning for Multidimensional Log-Density Gradient Estimation
Log-density gradient estimation is a fundamental statistical problem and possesses various practical applications such as clustering and measuring nongaussianity. A naive two-step approach of first estimating the density and then taking its log gradient is unreliable because an accurate density estimate does not necessarily lead to an accurate log-density gradient estimate. To cope with this pr...
